Can I upload my novel?
Yes, as text. Paste it, or upload a .txt file. Kon reads up to 200,000 characters per story, roughly 30,000 to 35,000 words of English prose. That covers a novella, or the first part of a novel.
- Word, PDF and EPUB files are not accepted yet. Save the file as plain text first. Word and Google Docs both have a plain-text option.
- Your chapter headings are kept, including a prologue and an epilogue. Without headings, Kon splits the text at changes of scene, time or point of view.
- A story can have up to 40 chapters. Each chapter has up to 6 pages and 16 panels.
- Character sheets and world notes can sit at the top. Kon reads them for facts. They never become a chapter of their own.
A longer novel has to be split into parts, and each part becomes its own story with its own cast drawings. Check the length first with the free manga length estimator.
Will the AI change my plot?
Kon works from what your text says, and it tells you where it had to fill a gap. The reading step records only what the story states: who the characters are, what happens and in what order. It invents nothing, and every fact it records is tied to a quote from your text.
| Part of your story | What Kon does with it |
|---|---|
| Events and their order | Kept. Kon plans the panels from what happens in the text. |
| Dialogue | Kept as you wrote it. Kon shortens a line only when it does not fit one balloon, and it keeps the meaning. |
| Looks your text states | Kept and locked. You cannot edit a trait marked "From your story". |
| Looks your text leaves open | Kon proposes them and marks each one "Kon's idea". You can rewrite any of them. |
| Long description | Mostly becomes art. Narration that matters to the plot becomes a caption. |
| Notes such as "draw this in watercolor" | Set aside. The art style that you pick applies to the whole story. |
Adapting still means choosing. A chapter has at most 16 panels, so Kon picks the moments to show, and a minor beat may not get its own panel. Read chapter 1 before you draw the rest. Every balloon can be edited, and any panel can be drawn again.
Can I turn fanfic into manga?
Fan fiction uses characters and worlds that belong to someone else, so it depends on what you do with the result. The Konyomi terms ask you to upload only a story that you wrote or have the right to use. They do not allow you to share content that you have no right to share, such as the story of another author.
- A story is private until you share it. Nobody else can open a private story.
- Before a story becomes public, we review it. We can refuse a story that uses someone else's work, and the owner of a work can ask us to remove it.
- A light novel or a web novel by another writer needs the permission of its author before you publish a manga of it.
Fan works are treated differently from country to country, and Konyomi cannot give legal advice. If you want to publish, the safest route is a story with your own characters. An original world of your own can still use the tropes you love.
Who owns the manga?
The Konyomi terms say that your story stays yours, and so does the manga that Kon makes from it. They also say that AI models made the drawings, so the law of your country decides which rights exist in them, and Konyomi cannot promise that a drawing is unlike every other drawing.
The terms say nothing specific about commercial use. Check the law where you live before you sell a book. Konyomi's PDF has no bleed for professional printing, so a printed edition needs extra work. See manga page size for the numbers a printer asks for.
Who can read my story?
- Other users: nobody, until you share it. You choose between private, a link, and public.
- AI model providers: they receive the text of your story and the drawings of your characters through OpenRouter, so that Kon can read and draw. They do not receive your name or email address. We choose providers and settings that do not allow them to train their models on your story.
- Konyomi: we use stories and manga, without your account details, to improve Konyomi. Our privacy page also says that we may license records of how Kon works, such as a request to a model and its drawing, to other companies like AI researchers. Those records never hold your name, email address or account ID.
- Deleting: write to us and we delete your account, your stories and your manga within 30 days.
Is it free, and what are the limits?
Signing in is free, and the first chapter of every published story is free to read. Making manga uses gems, and Konyomi shows the price before each step. While the launch offer lasts, a new account gets 70 gems, enough to plan a story with Kon and draw up to 3 main characters.
| Step | Gems |
|---|---|
| Kon reads your story (once for each story) | 20 |
| Kon draws one chapter | 100 |
| A new drawing of one panel | 10 |
| Changing the words in a balloon | Free |
Gem packs cost $19.99 for 600 gems (5 chapters), $34.99 for 1,200 gems (10 chapters) and $74.99 for 3,000 gems (25 chapters). Gems never expire. You can ask for a refund within 14 days if you used none of the gems of the pack.
