A chapter in a weekly manga magazine has about 18 to 22 pages. For planning, use 30 to 50 pages for a monthly chapter. Published chapters vary widely. The magazine's schedule sets the length, because one artist and a small team must finish the pages on time.

Why weekly chapters are short

A weekly artist delivers a chapter every seven days. At about 20 pages, that is close to three finished pages a day, with assistants for backgrounds and tones. Longer chapters require a different schedule or additional production support.

A monthly schedule gives more production time. Page counts and detail still depend on the series.

From pages to panels

Most pages have four to six panels. A weekly chapter of 20 pages therefore has about 80 to 120 panels. That count is a better measure of work than the page count.

Plan each page with the manga panel layout maker.

How long your own chapter should be

  1. Choose the format. Use 18 to 22 pages for a series chapter and 30 to 60 for a complete short story.
  2. Count the scenes. A scene takes about two to five pages.
  3. End on a hook. The last page of a chapter asks a question that the next chapter answers.

If your story is written as prose, paste it into the manga length estimator. It gives a page range and a chapter count.
